When one thinks of Irish immigrant work and occupations in America, four words immediately come to mind: NO IRISH NEED APPLY.

About This Blog

This blog was created as a final project for the course, HIS 385: Rights & Wrongs of Women in 19th Century America, offered at Stonehill College in the Spring of 2013. We were invited to explore any topic pertaining to women in 19th century America and I chose to focus on a vital aspect of America's past: immigration. Though there are countless ethnicities I could have focused on, and while their stories are also vital to the cultivation of American culture, I have always found the depiction of the Irish to be particularly compelling. This blog will focus on the stories of notable Irish women, as well as larger themes such as why they came to America and how they assimilated into society. Most importantly, this blog attempts to distinguish the narrative of female Irish immigration to America from the narrative of their male counterparts. The importance of women's history is often underrated by both historians and society. Through this blog, I hope to bring just one small aspect of their history to life for others who also share a love of American and women's history.
